Overlooking the beautiful harbour, Sydney is an amazing collaboration of beaches and skyscrapers. A visit here will satisfy almost any traveler. The sites located on or close to the harbour, the many districts and great beaches make Sydney a popular vacation spot for those who love to relax and those who love adventure. Whether you’re a backpacker or traveling with your family in tow, you’ll be able to experience everything that makes this Australian city so well loved.
Sydney Harbour, also known as Port Jackson, is the largest working natural harbour in the world. And although that’s important, its not what attracts visitors to it every time they come to Sydney. It’s here you’ll find the Sydney Opera House, a stunning piece of architecture. Although building it caused many headaches, the structure that stands now is one of the most popular performing arts venues around the globe. Its white sails can be seen from miles around and even if you’re not coming for a concert, you should make your way to see it up close. Visit the Coathanger, otherwise known as the Harbour Bridge. Its graceful arc was completed in 1932 and is one of the most recognized sites in Sydney. There’s a wonderful view along the footpath but if you’re up to the challenge, climb the 200 plus stairs located on the southeast side and enjoy the view. Climb back down and enjoy the ground level sites and sounds of Luna Park. This nostalgic amusement park opened in 1935 and is also one of the most recognized places on the Sydney Harbour. Maybe it has something to do with the huge clown face that serves at its entrance. Buy some tickets and enjoy the classic amusement park rides like the Ferris wheel and the Dodgem Cars. You’ll find a host of great activities that locals and visitors have been experiencing for generations. Sydney is filled with stunning skyscrapers and if you enjoyed the view from the Harbour Bridge, you’ll love the bird’s eye view of Sydney when you reach the top of Centrepoint Tower. You’ll almost feel like you’ve sprouted wings when you stand on the observation deck that’s 1000 feet above the city. Those afraid of heights may not want to try this, but if heights are no fear of yours, the view from here gives you a stunning picture of Sydney and should not be missed. And for those who hate the Stairmaster at the gym, you’ll be happy to know that you ride to the top, rather than sweat your way there.
Sydney is filled with great districts that showcase the many cultures and sites available for you to explore. Its more popular road is George Street. Beginning in the Rocks district at the north end, it continues through Chinatown (where you’ll find a great selection of restaurants and shops) and makes its way to the Town Hall, where you’ll also find the St. Andrew’s Cathedral and the Queen Victoria Building shopping centre. The Rocks is a popular site in Sydney. In 1788, it was the location of Australia’s first European settlement. Interestingly enough its first residents were convicts, whose crimes included stealing bread. You’ll find beautiful historic buildings in this area, most made out of sandstone. The Rocks also claims to have two of the oldest pubs in Sydney. Darling Harbour is a great location for pedestrians. There’s the National Maritime Museum, Sydney Aquarium, beautiful parks and miles of sandy beaches. You’ll also find that its Harbourside dining complex offers a great selection of food. Darling Harbour also boasts the Star City Casino. You’ll quickly find it to be a great place to spend your days as you explore all of its amazing sites. Treat yourself to a fantastic evening out and explore the sites of King Street Wharf. Close to Darling Harbour and Cockle Wharf Bay, King Street Wharf is filled with many fantastic restaurants. If you happen to be early for your reservation, you can even do some shopping here. At the end of your meal, visit one of the bars or enjoy a cup of java at a fine café. If you feel like coasting along the harbour, you’ll have a great selection of boat cruises to take you on your way.
Having trouble spotting a kangaroo? Have no fear. Sydney’s Taronga Zoo, which is linked to the Dubbo’s Western Plains Zoo, provides you with ample opportunities to see lots of wildlife. Along with the kangaroos, you’ll also see elephants, antelopes and platypuses. Its fun the whole family can enjoy. The location of the zoo makes it worth the trip as well. Take the short ferry ride from Circular Quay and enjoy the scenic view.
Its near impossible not to go to the beach when you visit Australia and Sydney is no exception. With over 70 beaches to choose from, you’ll love the surf and sand each one offers. But if you only have time to visit one, make your way to the famous Bondi Beach. The site of all that beautiful sand and the sound of the crashing waves are breathtaking. For those who are pros or those who’d like to try surfing out, Bondi beach has got you covered. The north side is for those just learning while the south offers a fantastic challenge for those who surf as well as they can walk. Be aware of the Backpackers Express, an insanely strong rip current that can take you pretty quickly. If you’re afraid of the sharks, and who isn’t, there’s a shark net that can be put into place if deemed necessary during the summer. Don’t let the shark net and rip current deter you from going here though. Bondi Beach is a great place to experience a real beach, rip currents included free of charge. And when you need a break from all that water, enjoy a meal of fish and chips or stroll through the surf shops. Hey, if you can’t surf like a pro, at least you can try looking like one.
Exploring Sydney includes a huge range of options. Surf the waves or stroll along the streets. Enjoy a delicious meal or visit the zoo… bad combo. How about visit the many sites or simply enjoy the beautiful scenery that surrounds you.
